Chesterfield County Fire & EMS is seeking two Fire Plans Reviewers who have or are willing to gain in-depth knowledge of the Virginia Construction Code and Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code. We are seeking commercial fire plan reviewers with exceptional communication and teamwork skills. This is a unique opportunity to become a key member of our highly qualified, collaborative, and motivated fire and life safety team. The qualified candidates will be a point of contact providing knowledge and guidance through the plans review process to ensure timely and seamless completion of ongoing building projects in Chesterfield County, in compliance with related codes, county ordinances and Fire & EMS policies. The incumbents must be a reliable, self-starters and able to mediate problems as they occur.
As a Fire Plans Reviewer your essential functions include the following:
- Assist developers, property owners, architects, engineers, and contractors through the process of reviewing plans for construction and/or renovation of all commercial and multi-residential buildings;
- Conduct reviews of architectural plans for new/existing buildings, renovations, and remodeling work, applying and explaining code issues while working with registered design professionals to enforce multiple provisions of building codes;
- Use independent judgment and specialized knowledge in applying building and related codes;
- Perform scheduled fire protection system inspections;
- Answer questions concerning status of permit applications;
- Conduct field inspections for inactive or expired permit applications relative to fire protection systems; and
- Provide architectural drawings to operations staff enabling fire ground personnel to field verify new construction in their first due response areas;
- Perform other duties as required.
Here’s what you need to apply:
Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering, fire science or a closely related field, three years of experience in a professional engineering capacity;
OR
Associate’s degree in fire science or closely related field with five or more years of experience in building and fire code interpretation and/or enforcement using relevant codes or standards;
OR
an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of relevant building and fire safety codes.
These attributes will be beneficial:
Ability to interpret building code, mechanical code, fire protection standards applicable to fire protection systems, accessibility, and other related codes; experience with interpreting architectural and engineering plans submittals and specifications, fire protection system design and acceptance testing of fire protection systems; knowledge of construction industry methods, materials, and equipment.
The candidate must have:
The ability to conduct thorough fire protection system inspections for code compliance; excellent customer service skills, and oral and written communication skills; be proficient in the use of a variety of office equipment including personal computers and related software; ability to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds and climb, kneel, bend, stoop, stand and walk for extended periods; ability to obtain applicable certifications through International Code Council (ICC) or National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) and a minimum of 3B Fire Protection General & 3C Fire Protection Plan Review is required within one year of employment date and 1C Building Plans Review within 36 months of employment. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months OR a Department of Motor Vehicles DMV driving record point balance less than negative one. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department
of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy” and therefore
requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check. Must be a US
citizen or have been a lawful resident of the US for the past ten consecutive years.

We’ll be honest – the strong candidate will possess the experience or the demonstrated intellect and ability to gain proficiency to accurately review architectural plans and apply relevant building and fire code standards. It is vital that they maintain a positive and professional attitude while explaining minimum code provisions to customers. They may, at times, be exposed to adverse physical conditions encountered on job sites to include such items as uneven terrain, noise, heavy equipment, and open excavation.
