The Inspection Services Division (ISD) within the Community Planning, Housing and Development (CPHD) Department is seeking an Electrical Codes Inspector to ensure that all phases of building construction are completed in conformance with codes, ordinances, and approved plans and specifications. The ISD is responsible for working with Arlington County citizens and developers to build and maintain property throughout the County.
Responsibilities include:
- Inspecting temporary electrical services and panels, feeder wiring, appliances, grounding, location and installation of equipment motors, and emergency power sources;
- Using computers and/or mobile devices to record the results and status of inspections;
- Preparing and issuing notices of violation, assessing job site safety and damages, and researching and interpreting codes;
- Reviewing construction plans and blueprints;
- Consulting with homeowners, contractors, and construction personnel regarding compliance with codes and ordinances;
- Receiving cross training in all areas of code enforcement and may be responsible for providing technical direction to other inspectors.
- Responding to emergency and after-hours inspections; and
- Preforming other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma/GED; plus
Electrical Codes Inspector I:
- Three (3) years of experience in electrical or general building construction trade; and
- Possess or obtain of 2 VA State NCPCCI or ICC certs: Residential Inspector AND Commercial Inspector in Electrical field within 12 months of hire.
Electrical Codes Inspector II:
- Three (3) years of experience in electrical or general building construction trade;
- One (1) year of experience in construction codes inspection or closely related work;
- Possess 2 VA State NCPCCI or ICC Certs: Residential Inspector AND Commercial Inspector in electrical field; and
- Possess or obtain of 3 additional VA ICC certifications: Residential Inspector for remaining 3 trade specialties within 36 months of employment.
Electrical Codes Inspector III:
- Three (3) years of experience in electrical or general building construction trade;
- Two 2 years of construction codes inspection experience or closely related work; and
- Possession of 5 VA state NCPCCI or ICC Certs: Residential Inspector AND Commercial Inspector for assigned trade specialty (electrical), AND Residential Inspector for remaining 3 trade specialties.
Substitution: Additional college education may substitute for up to one year of construction experience.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with an Associate degree in a related field and experience in one or more of the following:
- Applying and interpreting National Electrical Code (NEC);
- Inspection and enforcement of National Electrical Code (NEC);
- Enforcement of Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC); and
- Commercial installation/inspection of electrical systems in mid-rise and high-rise buildings.
