- Description:
- Performs administrative and technical work for the enforcement of the provisions of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, USBC.
- Essential Functions:

- Reviews commercial and residential building plans for new construction, additions, remodeling, etc.
- Performs commercial and residential field inspections for new construction, additions, remodeling, etc
- Provides feedback to customers on code issues; forwards code interpretations from the Building Official

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements
- Knowledge of all current and emerging code provisions of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
- Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship in construction or repair of buildings and structures.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, specifications, codes and standards.
- Ability to physically maneuver on scaffolds, structural members and in cramped quarters to accomplish thorough inspections.
- Ability to use provided software and hardware technology both in the office and field.
- Ability to provide a high level of customer service
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inter- and intra-agency personnel, property owners, building contractors and general public
- Ability to prioritize, and schedule assigned inspections
- Ability to maintain inspection logs and related records
- Ability to maintain compliance with the county’s vehicle policy within the Personnel Management Plan (PMP)
- General knowledge of standard office practices and procedures
- Ability to communicate orally, and in writing
- Ability to obtain all required certifications required by the Building Official
- Ability to maintain all state and ICC required continuing education credits to maintain certifications
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent and 3 to 5 years experience in construction work or inspections.
Special Requirements
- Must obtain all certifications to become a Combination Residential or Commercial Inspector within 36 months of assignment. Additional certifications may be required at the discretion of the Building Official.
- Must meet requirements for continuing education units to maintain an active certification in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards (VCS).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the PMP.

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Tasks may involve exposure to traffic hazards, dust, fumes, dirt, and vibrations. Ability to distinguish sounds, colors, and odors.
