Code Inspectors in the Code Enforcement Division enforce building maintenance and property maintenance codes, and other regulations or ordinances, in assigned areas of the city for Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation. They perform daily inspections in the field; issue notices of violations; explain regulations to the public; issue summonses; testify in court; access dwellings, commercial buildings, and undeveloped properties that may be difficult to access; and perform in accordance with the organization’s values and core strategies. State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector must be obtained within 18 months from date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.
This position may be filled as either a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II based on the selected applicant’s qualifications. State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector and attendance at the required state training modules is required to start at the Code Inspector II level position. The associated pay grades and starting salaries are as follows:
