Is there an official process in Virginia for requesting a variance to a particular code requirement while providing some equivalent facilitation or other item above the minimum code requirements to equally protect the health and life safety of the structures occupants and public in general? We are attempting to design a complex addition to a structure and are having trouble with a certain requirement with regard to an addition of a differing construction type.
The code does not use the term variance. The USBC does have a process for modifications. See section 106.3, link below.
