We have a resident that has built a 600 sq ft enclosed carport/garage.It is of the light frame metal construction. They want to use spray foam to insulate the walls and ceilings. Is a thermal barrier required over the foam if not living space?
Based on the following provision, I would say yes.
R316.4 Thermal barrier.
Unless otherwise allowed in Section R316.5, foam plastic shall be separated from the interior of a building by an approved thermal barrier of not less than 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard, 23/32-inch (18.2 mm) wood structural panel or a material that is tested in accordance with and meets the acceptance criteria of both the Temperature Transmission Fire Test and the Integrity Fire Test of NFPA 275.
I would want to see a ESR report on how the product is to be installed based on the testing of the product. I would say yes to a thermal barrier, or an ignition being required unless an intumescent coating is installed per most ESR reports for spray foam. With most spray foams, a thermal or ignition barrier is not required if installed in an attic or crawl space if access is only for access to utilities and not connected to a living space.
