Are side swinging egress doors required from each private garage in multiple private garage buildings? (See 2015 VCC 406.3.1) The buildings in question are located at an apartment complex and are of two types. One type consists of a 4-bay, 1100 sq. ft. building and the other an 8-bay 2150 sq. ft. building. Neither have side swinging doors and rely solely on the overhead doors as the means of egress. Each private garage is approximately 275 sq. ft. in area.
2015 VCC 1010.1.2 does allow other types of egress doors besides side swinging. So my second question is; would an overhead door meeting the opening force requirements of 2015 VCC 1010.1.3 constitute an acceptable egress door from the private garage?
I believe you would consider this a private garage by definition (See Chap 2), therefore, 1010.1.2 Door Swing. Egress doors shall be of the pivoted or side hinged swinging type.
Exception 1: Private garages and storage areas with an occupant load of 10 or less.
The roll-up garage door would then be considered your egress door.
