From what I understand in V.C.C. section102.3 exemption #1 building inspections departments do not get involved and issue permits for cell towers. We do issue permits for the equipment building and electrical service.I am understanding this correctly?
The cell towers are not exempt from permitting.
Looks like is exempt to me. Am I missing something?
Cell providers are not publicly regulated utility services so a permit for a cell tower is not exempt. Also, at the end of the exception it states: “the structures, including their service equipment, housing or supporting such equipment and wiring shall be subject to the USBC. Even if you can make a case for them being exempt, Code states they need to be permitted.
In Shenandoah Co. and surrounding areas the towers are installed by Shentel, the local phone company so yes there is argument to be exempt of permits. Just saying!
Cell phone companies are publicly regulated. They are excempt under the USBC, to include the tower itself. For those permitting them, who is climbing the tower to do the inspections? But seriously, I see no reason to regulate an already over-regulated site. They also do a great job of overseeing their contractors to ensure code compliance without us having to get involved.
