Could someone please give me the code section that requires you to exhaust the bathroom exhaust out of the roof instead of out of the soffit. thank you. p.s. I know the duct has to vent outside the soffit.
See M 1501.1 of the Virginia Residential Code

Same Code section in the 2012 or 2015 edition. If you need the section out of the Virginia Mechanical Code for a commercial job, let me know and I will send you that code section.

Gary, thank you for taking time to answer my question. I am familiar with the code section you sighted. The bathroom exhaust in question does not exhaust into the soffit. It comes thru and exhausts to the outside.
I guess that I am not sure what you are asking then. I do not know of anything that states that it has to exhaust through the roof in the code. Is it something to do with a HOA or Condo association? Town ordinance? Is this something you are being failed for?? I would ask the inspector for the code section. Give me a call 703-324-9324
