Agreed it would be covered but open without walls.
Should the porch roof attic be interconnected to the attic of the main roof then I would consider that a projection in accordance with R302.1.
However if the roof of porch that is attached or constructed similar to that of a deck or balcony then it would meet the exception IMO.
