Webinar Training: Using Metallography to Assess Metal Failures

Feb-7-2025 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EST

<< REGISTER HERE>>

Date: Friday, February 7, 2025
Speaker(s): Alan Humphreys
Time: ET | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Location: Zoom

Metals are crystalline solids consisting of a microstructure of arranged metallic grains. The size and morphology of these grains influence the mechanical properties of a metal and depend on its alloy composition, processing history, and service life. Analyzing the microstructure of a metal, a technique known as metallography, is a crucial part of failure analysis, as it can detect defects and other issues in the material. In addition, the fracture surface of a metal, which shows the interaction between the microstructure during crack growth, has well-established signatures that allow the failure mechanism to be established. In this webinar, we will show how microstructural and fracture surface analysis can help to solve key failure analysis projects.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how microstructures affect the properties of metals.
  • Identify different forms of microstructures.
  • Recognize key characteristics of fracture surfaces.
  • Discuss how these characteristics can be used during failure analysis.

Participants will earn 1 AIA CES Learning Unit (LU/HSW) for attending the live webinar. Registration is free. Please note that space is limited – email ev****@*gh.com to join our waitlist if the session is closed when you register.
