The City of Alexandria invites the public to kick-off Building Safety Month with an event on Friday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Market Square (301 King St.). The annual awareness month recognizes the importance of building safety and the professionals who implement them. For its 42nd year, the International Code Council announced that this year’s annual Building Safety Month will focus on “Safety for ALL”. The global campaign will address a new topic each week on keeping our communities safe and resilient. This free event will feature a proclamation signing by Mayor Justin Wilson and remarks by City Manager James Parajon. Ms. Cindy Davis, ICC President, will be the keynote speaker followed by lunch, a free raffle and exhibits from City departments and the local building community. The event also offers a free training session provided by VIRIDIANT of Virginia, featuring 5 hours of Continuing Educational Units (CEU’s) training on the Virginia Energy Conservation Code with hands on mechanical equipment testing and performances.
Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign offered each year to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and sustain safe and sustainable structures. Founded by the International Code Council, Building Safety Month is celebrated in May by jurisdictions worldwide. The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.
